Parrott s webpage: HYPERLINK "http://www.acpsd.net/Domain/2607" http://www.acpsd.net/Domain/2607 Bienvenidos! Welcome and congratulations! You have made it to Spanish Level 1. This is a year-long course and counts for high school credit. This course will be challenging and require study and practice time outside of the classroom. The grade you earn in this course will go on your high school transcript. The only way to remove a low final course grade is to re-take Spanish I in high school. Dropping Spanish: If a student decides that he/she wants to drop a high school credit class, it must be dropped within the first 10 school days. It is possible that the student might not be able to drop due to scheduling issues. The deadline might change this year due to our split schedule. COURSE OBJECTIVES: To help students attain proficiency in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. To help students acquire a firm linguistic base (grammar). To present the language within the context of the contemporary Spanish-speaking world and its culture. CURRICULUM (Course Description): By the end of this course you will be able to hold basic conversations about familiar topics with very rehearsed and memorized phrases. You will not leave this course as a fluent speaker or be able to understand what native speakers are saying in their natural conversations. Unit I for Level 1 Gusto en conocerte. (Its nice to meet you.) Topics covered: Different greetings; farewells and introductions, Formal and informal registers; Numbers, days, months, weather; The Spanish alphabet; Classroom expressions; Descriptions of self and others; Likes and dislikes Unit II for Level 1 Voy a la escuela Topics covered: School supplies, schedules, telling time, expressing feelings and likes and dislikes Unit III for Level 1 Vamos de compras! (Lets go shopping!) Topics covered: At the mall, clothing, foods/restaurants, regular and irregular verbs Unit IV for Level 1 Estoy en casa Topics covered: Family, home, rooms and objects in class GRADING INFORMATION: Grades will be posted regularly in the districts PowerSchool (Parent Portal) program. Students and teachers should check grades regularly. Log-in information is available in the main office for each individual student. PowerSchool also keeps track of absences. Letter Grade Numerical Grade A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F Below 60 Homework and assignments will usually be posted on Mrs. Parrotts webpage. They will also be written on the whiteboard in the classroom. It is the students responsibility to check the board daily for assignments. Students will always have the homework assignment to study what was taught, discussed, or practiced that day in class. Formative assessments: (participation, classwork, quizzes, pop quizzes, home assignments) = 40% of the quarter grade Summative assessments: (projects, tests) = 60% of the quarter grade Students will have semester exams. The exams will cover all topics taught during the course of the semester. Presentations and participation are major parts of this class. Participation includes being prepared physically and mentally for learning, having supplies, and allowing for all classmates to participate. Participation also includes having supplies for class. Discipline action may be taken if students continually do not have their supplies. Supplies include their folders, pencil/pen, extra paper, and any handouts or vocabulary they have received. Grammatical Errors: Unlike English, many foreign languages require special characters or accents to imply specific meanings. Often, if the character or accent is written incorrectly or is missing the words meaning could change. For this reason, the teacher reserves the right to deduct points on written work for missing punctuation, accents, articles, spelling, verb conjugations, and other similar grammatical errors. Please keep this in mind when studying your verbs and vocabulary. Tutoring: Tutoring is available on request of students or parents. The student must be putting forth the study time at home before tutoring takes place. Extra Credit: Some extra credit opportunities may arise during the year. One optional extra credit opportunity will be given each quarter. It is a poster/culture research project that is posted beside the whiteboard. Students are expected to study regularly and practice the material being presented. Attendance: If a student accumulates more than ten unexcused absences during the course then he/she could be denied credit. Please refer to the district policy for absences for high school credit courses. Parent notes might not count as excused absences. Late or Missing Work: Students are expected to submit work on assigned due dates for grading purposes. Work that is not submitted on the due date will be given a zero in the grade book and it will be up to the individual student to follow-up with the teacher to make-up the required work. Absences are the exception. Students have as many class days as they were out to complete make up work, tests, or quizzes. A student is not expected to take a test the day they return from an illness. Points may be deducted for late work. The final deadline to accept all work will be one week prior to the day the grades are due so that teachers will have ample time to submit all grades. Re-take Testing Policy: KMS believes in the mastery of student work, including mastery of completed work during assessments. On tests/major assessments only, if a student makes below a 65, the student will have the opportunity to complete one redo for partial credit back. The student will only have two weeks from the time the test/major assignment is given back to redo. Please see the School Handbook for more details about this policy. Tutoring: Tutoring is available upon request. Tutoring will not be offered to students who have not done their part in the learning process and have not spent time learning the vocabulary and verb endings. Tutoring is available for students who have studied, prepared, and still need help with grammatical concepts. Please see the teacher for more information. Tardies Promptness is expected; tardiness to class is unacceptable. Refer to the student handbook for clarification on how much time counts as a tardy versus an absence, and for consequences associated with tardiness. Students who are tardy interrupt instruction, distract other students, and miss instruction time. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS: Students are to be respectful of other learners and their learning needs. Each night students need to study any vocabulary or grammatical structures that have been taught thus far in the course. Language builds on itself and therefore previously learned material must be remembered. Students will seek the teacher for help when confused or struggling. Students will turn in work on time so that the teacher might give feedback early in the learning process. If the majority of the class seems to struggle with certain grammatical concepts, then the teacher will re-teach and re-assess to ensure learning. Vocabulary mastery does not count as grammatical concepts. Students will accurately spell, accent, and punctuate all work. In many cases, accents can change a words meaning. Punctuation and spelling are a key process to language acquisition and will often cause a reduction in points. Students and parents are expected and encouraged to monitor grades closely on PowerSchool. The website should be up and running shortly after school begins. Students are to make every attempt to speak in Spanish. The teacher will speak Spanish for the majority of the class. On-line translators will only be used to look up the occasional vocabulary word. Credit will not be given for assignments where students use a translator (of any kind) for large amounts of information. Large amounts of information might include an entire sentence. Culture and cultural activities will be taught and experienced throughout the year as holidays and traditions occur in the Hispanic world. Students are encouraged to share appropriate realia (souvenirs), Spanish language articles, advertisements, etc., with the class. Students are expected to participate in all oral and written class activities. It is an important skill to be able to work well individually and in a small group. As you make mistakes in Spanish, learn from them. Focus on the mistake, consider why you made it, and then try to correct it next time. RULES AND CONSEQUENCES: Note: The following rules, consequences, and rewards are discussed in depth during the first two or three days of a new class. They are re-visited and changed when needed. These rules are based on the expectations set forth by Kennedy Middle School and Seora Parrott. Classroom Rules: Pay attention and be alert. Be respectful towards others. Be respectful of your surroundings. Do not talk out of turn. Think. Listen. Consequences to breaking the rules (these rules are passed over depending on the severity of the incident): First offense warning (verbal, written, or visual) Second offense parent contact Third offense afterschool or lunch detention (up to teacher) Forth offense - administration (office) referral Rewards: Verbal rewards Phone calls, notes, or e-mails to parents commenting on good behavior or achievement Students will work together as a class to earn fiestas. Fiestas will often involve the students bringing food to share with the class and having extra Spanish game or review time. PARENT/STUDENT/TEACHER COMMUNICATION: The school webpage will be used as one method to communicate assignments, and other important information. We will use Schoology, the textbook website, Google voice, and my school webpage to communicate for in-class assignments and for posting worksheets, handouts, and resources. PowerSchool will continue to be used for communicating grading information with parents. Grades are updated regularly to ensure that students and parents are informed about student progress. Please refer to PowerSchool often to monitor student progress and attendance. HYPERLINK "http://www.Remind.com" www.Remind.com.
